Fort Abercrombie State Historic Park

About

Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park preserves one of Alaska's best-preserved WWII coastal defense installations on Kodiak Island. The campground sits within this 186-acre park featuring concrete bunkers, gun emplacements, and ready ammunition magazines built during 1941-1944 when Kodiak served as a major military base. The Kodiak Military History Museum provides detailed context about the fort's wartime role. The small campground has 8 sites designed primarily for tent campers: 5 small vehicle sites and 3 walk-in sites. Maximum vehicle length is 20 feet; larger RVs should use Buskin River State Recreation Site instead. Each site has a fire ring and table, with vault toilets, hand-pump drinking water, and food storage lockers available. A reservable picnic pavilion accommodates groups with six tables, a fire ring, and charcoal grill. Beyond camping, the park offers approximately 7 miles of hiking trails through spruce forests, scenic ocean cliffsides with excellent whale and marine mammal viewing, fishing for trout in Lake Gertrude, beachcombing, and wildlife watching. Bears visit the area during berry season.
