About
Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park sits on 221 acres of Kodiak Island coastline, preserving the ruins of a World War II coastal defense installation while showcasing the area's dramatic natural beauty. The park became part of Alaska's State Park System in 1969 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985. The campground features 8 sites designed primarily for tent campers, with 5 sites able to accommodate small RVs up to 20 feet. The park's narrow, rustic roads make maneuvering difficult for larger vehicles, so RV campers with vehicles over 20 feet are encouraged to use the overflow parking area or visit nearby Buskin River State Recreation Site. Two reservable public use cabins, Spruce Cabin and Monashka Cabin, offer alternative lodging options. A group camping area is also available by reservation. Visitors can explore historic WWII bunkers and military installations, including the Kodiak Military History Museum located in a restored Ready Ammunition bunker. The park offers hiking trails through deep spruce forests and wildflower-laden meadows, fishing opportunities in the park's lake, and stunning views from steep cliffs overlooking the surf-pounded coastline. The combination of cultural history and natural resources makes this one of the most unique park units of comparable size in the Alaska State Park System.
