Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 2:21AM EDT by NWS Gray ME

2:21 AM — 12:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures later this Holiday weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph across parts of the area. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Province Pond Shelter is a backcountry lean-to located on the scenic edge of Province Pond within the White Mountain National Forest. The open-sided shelter sleeps 6-8 campers and provides a classic backcountry camping experience in the forests of eastern New Hampshire near Chatham. Access requires a 1.6-mile hike from the parking area at the end of Peaked Hill Road (Forest Service Road 450). Beyond the shelter, ample space exists in the surrounding woods for tent camping. An open-air toilet with privacy screen is available, but no potable water exists on site. Campers must filter or purify water from the pond. The shelter operates first-come, first-served with no reservations or fees. Standard White Mountain National Forest backcountry regulations apply, including restrictions on fires within 1/4 mile of shelters. A bear-proof canister is recommended for food storage.

Directions

From South Chatham Road, take Peaked Hill Road (Forest Service Road 450) north for 2.6 miles to the parking area at the end of the road. The trailhead is located north of the eastern terminus of Hurricane Mountain Road. Hike 1.6 miles to reach the shelter.
