About

Doublehead Backcountry Cabin is a historic log structure built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps as part of a ski trail development project for the nearby resort town of Jackson. Perched atop the north summit of Doublehead Mountain at 3,053 feet, the cabin offers stunning views of Mount Washington, the Presidential Range, and on clear days extends into Maine. While other nearby ski trails were developed and commercialized, Doublehead Ski Trail and its cabin have retained their rustic, backcountry character. The cabin is accessible only by hiking, snowshoeing, or skiing the 1.8-mile Doublehead Ski Trail, which climbs 1,500 feet on steep grades. The facility is very rustic with minimal amenities: eight wooden bunks arranged in four partitioned rooms, two small tables, benches, and a wood stove for heat. An outhouse is located a short distance from the cabin. The cabin is not insulated and can be drafty and cold during winter months, even with the wood stove in use. Guests must be prepared to transport all gear and supplies on foot and should bring everything needed for a camping trip except a tent: sleeping bag, sleeping pad, food, cooking utensils, backpacking stove, firewood, water, toilet paper, and trash bags. Only dead and down wood may be cut for firewood, though resources are limited. Water is not available at the cabin, and any water from natural sources should be boiled or treated. The trail begins on private land, and hikers will encounter cross-country skiers and snowshoers on the Doublehead Ski Trail. A trail from the cabin leads to South Doublehead Mountain's peak.

Directions

From NH Route 16 in Jackson, turn onto Route 16A through Jackson village. Take Route 16B (Black Mountain Road) and follow for about 2 miles. Just past Black Mountain Ski Area, continue straight on Dundee Road for another 0.5 miles to the Doublehead Ski Trail/Old Path Trailhead on the left. Parking for 3-6 vehicles. The steep trail reaches the cabin in 1.8 miles, gaining 1,500 feet of elevation.
