Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 12:09PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

12:09 PM — 10:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Wild River Campground offers a backcountry camping experience at the terminus of Wild River Road, deep within the White Mountain National Forest on the Maine-New Hampshire border. This primitive, first-come-first-served campground serves as the primary staging area for day hikes and extended backpacking trips into the Wild River Wilderness. The campground provides basic amenities including vault toilets and seasonal potable water. Recreation opportunities center on the Wild River itself, which offers trout fishing, and the Wild River Trail, an easy-grade path that penetrates the wilderness. More adventurous hikers can explore the rugged terrain of the Wild River Wilderness via connecting trails. Access requires driving 5 miles down the gravel Wild River Road from Route 113. Both Route 113 and Wild River Road are gated closed during winter months, making the campground inaccessible outside the typical mid-May through mid-October operating season.

Directions

From Route 2 in Gilead, ME, travel south on Route 113 for approximately 3 miles. Turn onto Wild River Road (gravel) and continue 5 miles to the campground at the end of the road. Route 113 is gated closed during winter months.
