About
Black Mountain Backcountry Cabin was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and sits on what was once pasture land just below the summit of Black Mountain. The cabin was renovated in 1992 while maintaining its original character. Accessed via the Black Mountain Ski Trail, a 1.4-mile moderate grade trail starting at 1,250 feet elevation, the cabin sits at 2,450 feet and offers outstanding views of the 4,400-foot Wildcat Ridge and 6,288-foot Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the northeastern United States. The rustic cabin accommodates up to eight people with wooden bunks, a common room with benches, and a wood stove for heat. A composting toilet is located a short distance from the cabin. The cabin is not insulated and can be drafty and cold during winter months, even with the wood stove in use. Guests must pack in all supplies including sleeping bags, pads, food, cooking equipment, firewood, and water, as the nearby spring can be unreliable or frozen. The Black Mountain Ski Trail continues 0.4 miles beyond the cabin to the summit of Black Mountain, offering views of Carter Dome, Carter Notch, and Wildcat Ridge. Jackson Ski Touring Foundation operates groomed trails within a mile of the cabin, accessible via the East Pasture Trail with a trail pass.
