Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 12:25PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

12:25 PM — 10:00 PM

* Temperatures this Holiday weekend may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph across parts of the area. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Black Mountain Backcountry Cabin was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and sits on what was once pasture land. The cabin was renovated in 1992 while maintaining its original character. Located on the west side of Black Mountain, the cabin offers views of the 4,400-foot Wildcat Ridge and 6,288-foot Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the northeastern United States. The cabin is very rustic with minimal amenities: 8 wooden bunks, 2 small tables, benches, a wood stove for heat, and a broom for cleaning. A composting toilet is located a short distance away. There is no potable water; a spring near the cabin exists but may be unreliable or frozen, so bringing your own water is essential. The Black Mountain Ski Trail used to access the cabin is popular for backcountry skiing in winter and hiking in other seasons. The trail continues 0.4 miles beyond the cabin to the summit of Black Mountain, offering views of Carter Dome, Carter Notch, and Wildcat Ridge. A groomed trail system operated by Jackson Ski Touring Foundation is within a mile of the cabin (trail pass required).

Directions

From Route 16, turn into Jackson Village. Follow the loop through town until you reach 16B/Carter Notch Road. Follow Carter Notch Road for 3.9 miles until you reach Melloon Road. Turn right onto Melloon Road and follow for about 1/3 mile. Parking is available for 4-6 vehicles. The trailhead is on your right about 100 feet up a private drive. Hike 1.4 miles on the Black Mountain Ski Trail to reach the cabin.
