Special Weather Statement issued May 23 at 2:28AM EDT by NWS Gray ME
* Air temperatures in the lower 60s to lower 70s this weekend (50s on Sunday) may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Generally light and variable winds shift to southerly today. Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About
Basin Campground occupies a pleasant mixed hardwood forest setting in a remote corner of White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. The small facility provides 13 campsites (6 tent-only and 7 standard nonelectric) along a single loop road, situated a short distance from the 23-acre Basin Pond. The campground offers vault toilets and potable water but no showers, hookups, or dump station. The primary draw is access to Basin Pond, where visitors can fish for trout or paddle canoes and kayaks (non-motorized boats only via the on-site boat launch). The 4.5-mile Basin Trail begins at the campground and numerous other hiking and mountain biking trails are within a short drive. The surrounding forest is home to moose, white-tailed deer, black bear, and nearly 200 bird species including the rare Bicknell's Thrush. The nearby town of Fryeburg, Maine provides groceries, restaurants, and fuel. Day trips to the Presidential Range and 6,288-foot Mount Washington are popular excursions from this location.
Directions
From Fryeburg, Maine, take Highway 113 north 15 miles to the campground.
