IMP SHELTER

Open — Open year-round. Fee is $15 per person per night collected by on-site caretaker in summer or via self-service cash box when caretaker is not present.

About

Imp Shelter offers a rustic backcountry camping experience in the northern White Mountain National Forest. Located on a spur trail off the Appalachian Trail between North Carter and Mount Moriah, this shelter provides overnight accommodations for hikers traversing the Carter-Moriah range. The shelter was last rebuilt in 1980 and was the last native timber shelter constructed in the White Mountains. The facility includes a closed shelter structure with a large sleeping shelf that accommodates approximately 12 people, along with tent platforms for additional camping. A caretaker is stationed on-site during the summer season to collect fees and assist visitors. When the caretaker is not present, campers use self-service cash boxes. This backcountry site is ideal for experienced hikers and backpackers seeking a remote mountain experience. Campers must come prepared with their own water and supplies, as no potable water or restroom facilities are available on-site. The shelter is located in a scenic area of the White Mountain National Forest, providing access to ridge hiking and mountain summits.

Directions

Access via a 0.2-mile spur trail from the Carter-Moriah Trail between North Carter and Mount Moriah. The shelter is approximately 1.7 miles north of North Carter summit. Primary trailhead access is from Stony Brook Trail or Imp Trail parking areas along Route 16 near Gorham.
