About

Prairie State Park Campground provides rustic camping in the heart of Missouri's largest remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The campground offers a small number of basic, primitive campsites available only on a walk-up registration basis, with no advance reservations accepted. Sites can accommodate groups of up to 20 people and are suitable for small to mid-sized RVs, though no hookups or electrical service are available. The camping area features minimal amenities to preserve the natural prairie environment. Potable water is available on the south side of the shop building before entering the camping area, and a vault toilet serves both the main campground and the backpack camp. The park also offers a primitive backpack camp where campfires are prohibited, though backpack stoves are permitted. Camping is limited to 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period. The nearly 4,000-acre park protects one of the few remaining examples of tallgrass prairie in Missouri, home to reintroduced bison and elk herds. The Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center offers interpretive exhibits, and several hiking trails provide opportunities to explore the prairie ecosystem. The campground's remote location offers solitude and panoramic views of the grasslands.
