About

Prairie State Park preserves Missouri's largest remaining tract of original tallgrass prairie, an ecosystem that once covered over a third of the state but now exists on less than 1% of the land. The park's rolling vistas, diverse wildflowers, and free-roaming bison herd offer a glimpse into what much of the Midwest looked like before European settlement. The Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center provides exhibits and interpretive programs about this rare habitat. Camping here is primitive and walk-up only. Basic campsites can accommodate groups up to 20 people and have access to vault toilets and potable water located on the south side of the shop building. There are no fire rings, picnic tables, showers, or hookups. A backcountry camp along Coyote Trail offers backpackers a more remote experience within the bison grazing unit, limited to groups of seven with campfires prohibited. Pets are allowed with a maximum of two dogs per site on leashes no longer than 10 feet. Camping is limited to 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period. The park's location in Barton County near Mindenmines provides access to the unique prairie landscape of southwest Missouri.
