Powhatan State Park Group Campground is a dedicated group camping facility situated within the 1,565-acre Powhatan State Park along the historic James River in northwest Powhatan County. The campground features four tent-only campsites designed to accommodate clubs, scout troops, and large family events, with a total capacity of 24 campers. The facility provides basic amenities including vault toilets on-site and two water spigots in the camping area. For those seeking shower facilities, the River Bend Campground bathhouse is accessible approximately 0.5 miles away. The park offers access to about 12 miles of multi-use trails through diverse habitats including field edges, upland pine forests, and mature hardwood stands, providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. The park also features three car-top boat slides for James River access, though fishing access is limited due to high bluffs along the riverbank. Powhatan State Park is conveniently located 45 minutes from Richmond and offers a range of recreational opportunities including hiking, horseback riding on 9 miles of equestrian trails, and paddling on the James River. The park operates with dawn-to-dusk hours, with the office and gift shop open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Directions

From west of Richmond, take exit 159 to Gum Springs-Goochland and follow Route 522-S until it joins Route 6. Turn left at the stoplight onto Route 522-S and Route 6-E, then turn right onto Maidens Road (Route 522-S) and go about 1.9 miles. Turn right onto Route 617 (Old River Trail) and go about 1.5 miles. The park entrance is on the right.
