About
The Poso Guard Station Cabin sits atop a mountain in the Giant Sequoia National Monument within Sequoia National Forest, just an hour from Bakersfield. Built in 1933 to house fire patrolmen, this historic board and batten cabin has been modernized while retaining its character. At 4,480 feet elevation, it offers sweeping views of the San Joaquin Valley, the Greenhorn Mountains, and Tobias Peak with its 8,300-foot lookout tower. The one-story, one-bedroom cabin accommodates five guests with a queen bed, twin bed, and a double hide-a-bed couch. Modern amenities include electricity, hot and cold running water, a furnace, full kitchen with stove, refrigerator, microwave, and all cookware, plus a bathroom with flush toilet and tub-shower. Outside, a picnic table and fire ring sit among the pines and oaks, with space for additional tents or an RV (no hookups). The area offers year-round recreation including hiking, fishing, biking, and horseback riding in summer, and skiing and snowmobiling in winter. Wildlife viewing opportunities include deer, cattle, golden eagles, and occasional California condors. The Tobias Fire Lookout and Trail of 100 Giants are both an hour's drive away. Temperatures range from the 20s in winter to the high 90s in summer, and weather can change rapidly.
