About
Polihale State Park sits at the end of the road on Kauai's remote western shore, offering one of Hawaii's most dramatic camping experiences. The park encompasses a 17-mile stretch of golden sand beach, Hawaii's longest, backed by towering 100-foot sand dunes and framed by the rugged cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast to the north. This isolation is both the park's greatest appeal and its primary challenge for visitors. Reaching Polihale requires navigating approximately 5 miles of unimproved dirt road that becomes impassable when wet. Four-wheel drive vehicles are strongly recommended, and many rental car companies prohibit their vehicles on this road. Once at the park, campsites are minimally developed, with some located on berms offering partial shade from trees and others directly on the beach. Facilities are basic: flush toilets, cold outdoor showers, and picnic tables are available, but there is no potable water anywhere in the park. Campers must bring all their own water, food, and supplies. Swimming is extremely dangerous due to powerful offshore currents, though Queen's Pond offers calmer waters during summer months. The park holds significant cultural importance with Hawaiian burial sites and endangered plant habitat throughout.
Directions
From Waimea, head north on Highway 50 toward Kekaha. Continue past the Pacific Missile Range Facility entrance. Shortly after the pavement ends, turn left onto the unpaved access road and continue approximately 5 miles to the park. The road is rough, often rutted, and becomes impassable when wet. 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended.
