About

Pala'au State Park occupies 233 acres of ironwood forest at 1,600 feet elevation on Molokai's northwest shore. The campground is nestled among towering ironwood trees, providing a shaded, tranquil setting for tent campers. A short walk from camp leads to a dramatic overlook of Kalaupapa Peninsula, the isolated settlement that once served as a leprosy colony and is now preserved as a National Historical Park. Another trail leads to the Phallic Rock (Ka Ule o Nanahoa), a natural stone formation with Hawaiian cultural significance. Facilities include restrooms, cold outdoor showers, and a pavilion. Drinking water is not available in the park, so campers must bring their own supply. Vehicles are not allowed in the campground area. The park sits in an upland climate that can be cooler and wetter than coastal areas, particularly in winter months. The drier period from May through October generally offers the best camping conditions. This is the only state park campground on Molokai.

Directions

From Kaunakakai, head west on Highway 460 (Maunaloa Highway) for approximately 9 miles, then turn right onto Highway 470 (Kalae Highway). Continue north about 4 miles to the park entrance at the end of the road.
