Expect Long Waits at the Summit Entrance Station Before Sunset

About
Hosmer Grove Campground sits at 6,800 feet elevation in the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park, nestled in the mountain's cloud belt. The campground features 6 tent-only sites spread across a sloping, grassy field, each equipped with a picnic table and grill. Small camping trailers and pop-up campers are permitted only in designated parking spaces. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring over 30 miles of trails that descend into Haleakalā Crater. A self-guided nature trail begins and ends at the campground, winding through the eucalyptus grove planted in 1909 and adjacent sub-alpine shrubland. The area is renowned for bird watching, with native Hawaiian forest birds most active at dawn. Hikers should note that the soft, sandy nature of crater trails requires twice as much time to ascend as to descend, and there is no shade or water on the crater floor. The campground lies in Haleakalā's cloud belt and frequently experiences misty, rainy conditions, particularly during winter months and afternoons. Weather can change rapidly from warm and sunny to cold and wet. Nighttime temperatures drop to near freezing in winter, with daytime highs averaging 50-65°F year-round. The Park Headquarters Visitor Center is located a short distance up the summit road, with another visitor center at the volcano's rim.
Directions
From Kahului, drive 28 miles along Haleakalā Highway 37 to 377. Allow at least 1 hour 45 minutes from Kahului to the park entrance station. Seven hundred feet past the Summit District Entrance Station, turn left at the four-way intersection following signs for Hosmer Grove Campground. Follow the road for 0.5 mile to reach the campground parking lot.
