About

Malaekahana State Recreation Area is one of Oahu's premier beach camping destinations, situated on the scenic windward North Shore between Laie and Kahuku. The park's 37 developed tent campsites are nestled in a shady, ironwood forest that backs a beautiful sandy beach with calm, swimmable waters. The offshore island of Mokuauia (Goat Island) is accessible by wading at low tide and is a popular day excursion for campers. The recreation area is divided into two sections. Kalanai Point to the south offers the primary camping facilities and remains fully operational. The Kahuku section to the north has been undergoing major improvements since August 2023, which may periodically affect access and camping availability in that area. Both sections provide opportunities for swimming, bodysurfing, snorkeling, and shore fishing. Facilities include restrooms, outdoor showers, water fountains, picnic tables, and trash receptacles. Camping is permitted Friday through Wednesday only; no camping is allowed on Thursday nights. Permits must be obtained in advance through the Explore Outdoor Hawaii reservation system. Maximum stay is 5 consecutive nights. Pets are not allowed in the campground.
