About

Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area sits at 6,200 feet on the upper slopes of Haleakala Volcano within Kula Forest Reserve. The campground occupies a unique ecological zone where planted conifer forests create an atmosphere more evocative of the Pacific Northwest than tropical Hawaii. Redwoods, pines, cedars, and eucalyptus form dense stands along an extensive trail network. The high elevation brings dramatically different conditions than the beaches below. Temperatures drop sharply after sunset, and winter nights frequently see freezing temperatures. The area often sits within the fog belt, creating misty conditions. On clear days, views extend across Central and West Maui to the islands of Kahoolawe, Molokai, and Lanai. Access requires a 4WD vehicle due to the rough, steep road conditions. Hunters may be active in the surrounding forest reserve, so wearing bright colors is recommended. The isolation and elevation make this a destination for experienced campers seeking solitude and cooler mountain conditions away from typical Hawaiian beach camping.

Directions

From Kahului, take Highway 37 (Haleakala Highway) toward Kula. Continue past Kula onto Highway 377 (Kekaulike Avenue). Turn left onto Waipoli Road and follow it approximately 10 miles to the recreation area. A 4WD vehicle is required due to rough road conditions.
