Napali Coast State Wilderness Park Campground

Open

Open year-round with advance permits required. Camping permits are available 90 days in advance through the Hawaii State Parks reservation system. Permits sell out months ahead, particularly for summer dates. A valid camping permit is required to hike beyond Hanakāpī'ai (mile 2). Maximum stay is 5 consecutive nights along the trail, with no more than 2 consecutive nights at Hanakoa.

About

Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park encompasses one of Hawaii's most dramatic and inaccessible coastlines, featuring towering sea cliffs, lush valleys, and nearly 1,000-year-old Hawaiian archaeological sites. The only land access is via the Kalalau Trail, an 11-mile route that begins at Kē'ē Beach in Hā'ena State Park and traverses exposed ridges, narrow ledges, and multiple stream crossings before reaching Kalalau Valley. Camping is permitted at two designated areas: Hanakoa Valley (6 miles in) and Kalalau Valley (11 miles). Hanakoa features composting toilets and rain shelters, serving as a practical stopover for the strenuous journey. Kalalau Valley offers composting toilets and access to Kalalau Beach, though stream water must be treated before consumption. There is no potable water, trash service, or cell coverage anywhere in the park. This is true wilderness camping requiring complete self-reliance. Open fires are prohibited to protect archaeological sites and native ecosystems. Pets are strictly prohibited due to threats to endangered seabirds. Commercial guided trips and boat drop-offs are not permitted. The park protects critically endangered species and ancient Hawaiian cultural sites throughout the valleys.

Directions

Access the Kalalau Trail from Kē'ē Beach at the end of Highway 560 in Hā'ena State Park on Kauai's north shore. Entry through Hā'ena State Park requires either a valid camping permit or separate entry/parking reservations through GoHaena. Park gates open 7:00am-7:45pm daily. Limited overnight parking at Hā'ena State Park is available only for campers with valid Kalalau Valley permits.
