Kokee State Park Campground

About

Kōkeʻe State Park Campground offers a unique high-elevation camping experience on Kauaʻi's remote west side. Situated at roughly 4,000 feet, the campground experiences cooler temperatures and frequent mist, providing relief from coastal heat and a chance to explore native Hawaiian montane rainforest ecosystems. The park encompasses over 4,300 acres and connects to Waimea Canyon State Park. The campground serves as a base for exploring the park's extensive trail system, which ranges from easy nature walks to challenging backcountry routes. Popular destinations include views of Kalalau Valley, the Alaka'i Swamp Trail through one of the world's wettest spots, and numerous overlooks into Waimea Canyon. The Kōkeʻe Natural History Museum provides maps and interpretive exhibits, while the Kōkeʻe Lodge serves meals and operates a gift shop. Reservations are required through Hawaii's Explore Outdoor system and can be made up to 90 days in advance. Campsites accommodate up to 10 people with a maximum stay of 5 consecutive nights. The campground is tent-only with no RV accommodations. Pets are prohibited in all Hawaii state parks to protect native bird species.

Directions

From Līhuʻe, take Highway 50 west through Waimea, then turn right onto Waimea Canyon Drive (Highway 550). Continue approximately 15 miles uphill to Kōkeʻe State Park. The campground is located near the Kōkeʻe Lodge and museum.
