About
Located just 15 minutes from Atlanta in the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, Panola Mountain State Park offers a primitive camping experience with 5 hike-in tent sites near Scout Lake. The campground is approximately 3/4 to 1 mile from the parking area, providing a secluded experience while remaining accessible. Each campsite includes a tent pad, fire ring, and picnic table. The park is home to a 100-acre granite monadnock similar to Stone Mountain but smaller and more pristine, designated as a National Natural Landmark. The campground serves as a base for exploring the park's paved biking trails, forested hiking trails, fishing lakes, archery range, and nature center. The primitive sites feature composting pit privies but no water or electrical hookups, making this a true back-to-basics camping experience. Campers must bring their own water and be prepared for primitive conditions. Pets are allowed at the campsites, though they are not permitted on ranger-led hikes to the granite mountain. The park offers numerous activities including geocaching, orienteering, birding, bouldering (permit required), and boat rentals, making it an ideal retreat near Metro Atlanta.
Directions
Located at 2620 Highway 155 SW, Stockbridge, GA 30281 in Henry and Rockdale Counties. The primitive campground is accessed via a 3/4 mile hike from the parking area.
