About
Old Condon Ranger Station is a historic rental cabin nestled in Swan Valley, just west of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and about five miles east of the Swan River. Part of a Forest Service compound constructed in the early 1920s to operate the Condon Ranger District (now Swan Lake Ranger District), this two-story cabin was carefully restored for public use while maintaining its historic character. The cabin features a screened porch with views of the Mission Mountains across an open field, and is backed by towering mixed pine trees with Simpson Creek flowing nearby. Inside, guests find modern amenities including electricity, propane furnace, a full kitchen with refrigerator and gas range, and an indoor bathroom with running water and flush toilet. The cabin can comfortably sleep up to eight people across three upstairs bedrooms (two double beds and four single beds in bunks) plus a fold-out couch. Basic cookware, dishes, and utensils are provided. The location offers excellent year-round recreation opportunities. Visitors enjoy fishing in nearby Simpson Creek and the Swan River, wildlife viewing (including grizzly bears), and exploring the surrounding wilderness. Hiking and backpacking trails in summer become cross-country skiing and snowmobiling routes in winter. The road to the cabin is plowed in winter, though guests should prepare for winter driving conditions. This is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out facility in grizzly bear country, and guests must clean the cabin before departure.
Directions
