About
Observatory Campground in Cleveland National Forest provides a unique camping experience for astronomy enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Located at 4,800 feet elevation in Southern California's Palomar Mountains, the campground sits just two miles from the Palomar Observatory, a world-class research facility operated by Caltech. The facility features 36 sites (30 single and 6 double), with several equipped with level cement pads specifically designed for telescope setup. The campground offers solid amenities including drinking water, hot coin-operated showers during peak season, flush toilets (peak season), and vault toilets year-round. Each loop features trash collection, grills, and fire rings. Two ADA-accessible sites are available. The forested setting of pine and oak provides shade, while strategically cleared sites offer unobstructed views of the night sky. Free monthly "Explore the Stars" events run Fridays and Saturdays through spring, summer, and fall, bringing amateur astronomers together to share the night sky with visitors. An on-site amphitheater hosts interpretive programs and occasional movies. The 2.2-mile Observatory National Recreation Trail connects directly to Palomar Observatory. Wildlife including mountain lions, feral pigs, and black bears have been sighted in the area.
