Uncompahgre National Forest

Weed Free Forage Products

The purpose of this Order is to prevent the introduction or spread of noxious weeds.

About

Oak Cabin sits at 9,000 feet among scattered aspen trees on the northern end of the Uncompahgre National Forest, one of three cabins at the historic Cold Springs Work Center. Built in the 1930s for Forest Service personnel, this semi-rustic single-story cabin now serves as a seasonal rental sleeping up to four adults. The cabin features two twin beds in a bedroom, a queen sofa sleeper in the living room, and a bathroom with flush toilet and shower. The cabin operates without electricity but includes propane-powered stove and refrigerator, along with basic cooking and eating utensils, pots, pans, and cleaning supplies. Guests must bring battery or propane lanterns (kerosene prohibited), bedding, toilet paper, dish towels, and backup drinking water as on-site water availability can be limited. This is a pack-in/pack-out facility requiring guests to remove all trash. The location provides direct access to the Divide Forks ATV complex with over 50 miles of trails, the Tabaguache Trail System for mountain biking, and Big Creek Reservoir 14 miles away for fishing. Hunters frequent the area in fall. Access is via Forest Road 406 from Divide Road, with standard vehicles suitable in summer but 4WD recommended in October depending on weather. Cell coverage is unreliable, and bears are present in the area.

Directions

From Grand Junction, head south on Highway 50. Turn right on County Road 141 heading south for 14.5 miles. Make a sharp left on Divide Road (look for sign reading "National Forest Access Divide Road, Uncompahgre Plateau"). Follow Divide Road for 19.6 miles and turn left on Forest Road 406 at the "Cold Springs Work Center" sign. Go a quarter-mile and turn right on 406.1A. The cabin is a half-mile after the turn on the left. Have the combination lock code ready to enter the gate.
