About
North Fork Campground is nestled along the North Fork of the Cispus River in the Cowlitz Valley Ranger District of Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The campground sits beneath a dense canopy of old-growth Douglas fir, hemlock, maple, and cedar trees, providing a classic Pacific Northwest forest camping experience. The facility includes individual campsites in the main campground plus three separate group sites (Bear, Beaver, and Elk) that offer secluded camping with gated access along the river. The campground serves as an excellent base camp for diverse recreational activities. Mountain bikers, hikers, and OHV enthusiasts can access the nearby multi-use Valley Trail, which connects to a network of over 50 miles of OHV trails. For those preferring foot traffic only, the North Fork Trail climbs 1.6 miles from behind the old Guard Station to a bluff above the campground with scenic vistas of the Cispus River, while the River Trail offers a relatively flat 0.6-mile walk behind the group sites. Anglers can fish the Cispus River for brook trout, steelhead, and salmon. The location places visitors between three of Washington's most iconic peaks: Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams, and Mount Rainier. The nearby town of Randle provides access to the Windy Ridge Lookout at Mount St. Helens, and adventurous hikers can tackle the challenging Tongue Mountain Trail, which climbs to 4,838 feet. The campground is managed by a concessionaire and operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-September.
