About

Abundant in wooded hills and scenic valleys, Nine Eagles State Park is one of southern Iowa's most picturesque parks, encompassing 1,100 acres in Decatur County. The park features three developed campgrounds with a total of 68 campsites, including 28 with electrical hookups. Modern amenities include showers, restrooms, and a trailer dump station. For equestrian enthusiasts, seven primitive horse campsites are available with fire rings, pit toilets, water access, and hitching rails. The centerpiece of the park is a clear 64-acre lake fed by a timbered watershed, making it one of the clearest artificial impoundments in Iowa. Fishing opportunities abound for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill. Only rowboats and electric motors are permitted on the lake. The park provides a fishing jetty for shoreline access, plus a boat ramp and fish cleaning station. Recreational opportunities include nine miles of hiking trails that wind through rugged terrain and remnants of native prairie, including a three-mile trail around the lake. Six miles of bridle trails accommodate horseback riding. The park also features a sandy swimming beach, shaded picnic areas with tables and fire grills throughout, and two reservable open shelters. In winter, seven miles of multi-use trails are available for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
