About

Newtown Battlefield State Park commemorates the August 29, 1779 Battle of Newtown, a pivotal engagement in General Sullivan's campaign against the Iroquois Confederacy during the American Revolution. The park features a granite obelisk erected in 1912 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Grounds were developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The campground offers 18 campsites (including two with 30-amp electric hookups) and 5 rustic cabins. Sites accommodate up to 6 people with driveway lengths of 20-40 feet for back-in parking. Amenities include showers, a dump station, picnic tables, grills, playground, and horseshoe pits. Cabins are rustic without bedding, cookware, or heat and require a 2-night minimum stay. The park sits atop a ridge overlooking the Chemung River Valley near Elmira. Bow hunting is permitted in designated areas. Winter access is available dawn to dusk by foot only with no facilities open.
