About
Newtown Battlefield Reservation State Park preserves the site of the Battle of Newtown, which occurred in August 1779 during one of the largest offensive campaigns of the American Revolution. The Sullivan-Clinton Campaign was launched against several tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy who had sided with the British. In 1973, the battlefield was designated as a historic landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places. A stone monument was dedicated on the hilltop in 1879, with the present granite monument erected in 1912. Today, this 372-acre park offers a quiet getaway for history buffs and nature lovers. The park features camping facilities including 18 campsites (accommodating tents and trailers up to 40 feet), 5 rustic cabins, and multiple pavilions. During the 1930s, Civilian Conservation Corps crews developed many of the park's facilities, including the beautiful rustic lodge. Park amenities include showers, a dump station, playground, and picnic areas, all with the benefit of scenic views overlooking the Chemung River Valley. The park operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-October with reservations available through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance. Sites require a 1-night minimum stay (cabins require 2 nights), with a maximum stay of 14 consecutive nights. Each campsite permits two tents or one hard-wheeled camping unit plus one tent, with up to 6 people per site. Nearby attractions include Mark Twain State Park, Watkins Glen State Park, Robert H. Treman State Park, and Buttermilk Falls State Park.
