Buttermilk Falls State Park sits just south of Ithaca along Route 13, offering a quintessential Finger Lakes camping experience. The park's centerpiece is Buttermilk Falls, a dramatic 165-foot cascade where Buttermilk Creek tumbles over a series of ledges into a natural swimming pool. The gorge trail climbs alongside the creek past 10 waterfalls, revealing layers of geological history carved through shale and sandstone over millennia. The campground occupies the lower park area with 25 wooded campsites accommodating tents or small camping units up to 20 feet. Eighteen rustic cabins are also available, sleeping 4-5 people each. The cabins are basic with no bedding, cookware, or heat, but some have electric outlets. Facilities include restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, playground, and picnic areas. The natural swimming pool at the falls provides a refreshing alternative to traditional pools. Beyond the campground lies Larch Meadows, a peaceful wetland accessible by nature trail. The park connects via trail to neighboring Robert H. Treman State Park, allowing extended hiking through the gorge-rich landscape. The location just minutes from downtown Ithaca provides easy access to restaurants, Cornell University, and the broader Finger Lakes wine region.
