Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, offering 305 campsites in a spectacular natural setting at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. The park's claim to fame is its breathtaking gorge where a stream descends 400 feet past towering 200-foot cliffs, creating 19 waterfalls along its two-mile course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls, passing through the spray of Cavern Cascade, while rim trails provide overlook views. The campground features multiple loops including Cayuga Village and Mohawk Village, which are the only areas with electric hookups. All sites include fire rings with cooking grills, and the facility provides modern restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station. Campers can enjoy an Olympic-size swimming pool and kiddie pool (open late June through Labor Day), modern playgrounds, picnic facilities, and a camp store with concessions and gifts. The park offers excellent recreation opportunities including hiking the famous gorge trail and rim trails, fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek (renowned for spring rainbow trout runs), and scheduled summer gorge tours. Rustic cabins are also available for those wanting shelter without electricity or water. The location provides easy access to other Finger Lakes attractions including the Watkins Glen International Racetrack, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
