About

Lawrence Recreation Area is a day-use facility managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the south side of Cowanesque Lake in Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains region. Located along the Allegheny Plateau in the Appalachian Mountains, the area offers a scenic lakeside setting with rolling terrain and open fields. The primary feature is the Cayuga Shelter, a reservable group picnic shelter that is fully accessible and can accommodate up to 100 people. The shelter includes electric hookup and is situated in a lovely lakeside location. The facility provides access to shoreline fishing on the 1,085-acre Cowanesque Lake, which is home to a variety of native fish species. The surrounding area offers extensive recreational opportunities including hiking on the Mid State Trail, which links trails at Cowanesque and nearby Hammond Lake into a long path extending through Pennsylvania from Maryland to New York. The fields and forests around the lake provide habitat for large and small game species. Additional fishing access is available at the North and South Tailrace areas below the dam.
