Nerstrand Big Woods State Park day use facilities offer visitors access to one of Minnesota's last remaining tracts of the historic Big Woods, a rare maple-basswood forest ecosystem. The park features 11 miles of hiking trails that wind through towering hardwoods and lead to Hidden Falls, a peaceful cascade perfect for contemplation. In spring, the forest floor transforms into a wildflower garden showcasing over 50 species including the federally endangered dwarf trout lily found nowhere else in the world. The day use area includes picnic facilities with tables and fire rings, two reservable picnic shelters ideal for group gatherings, and a playground for families. The park's trail system provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and nature study throughout the year. Autumn brings spectacular foliage displays as maples, basswood, and oak trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. Winter visitors can explore the park on snowshoes or use 4 miles of designated snowmobile trails. The park hosts naturalist programs including birding events, wildflower walks, and educational activities. From I-35, take State Highway 19 east into Northfield. Go south on State Highway 3, east on State Highway 246, then turn right onto County Road 29.
