Relative humidity values will drop to around 20-30 percent along with northwest winds gusting 20-25 mph. Given the extremely dry fuels, near critical fire weather conditions are expected starting during the late morning hours and lasting through mid afternoon. Elk Lake Group Camp sits along the shores of 303-acre Elk Lake within Minnesota's oldest state park, Itasca. This primitive group site accommodates up to 50 people and offers two vault toilets, a hand-pump water source, a screened shelter, picnic tables, and a fire ring with grill. No electricity or hookups are available, making it ideal for groups seeking a rustic camping experience. The campground provides direct lake access via steps leading to the shoreline. Elk Lake is one of only 25 sentinel lakes in Minnesota and supports walleye, perch, largemouth bass, bluegill, northern pike, and muskellunge. A public boat launch is less than half a mile away for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing boats. Access to the camp is via the scenic one-way Wilderness Drive through towering old-growth pines. The site can accommodate both tents and smaller RVs, though the primitive nature of the camp means no electrical hookups or modern restroom facilities. Pets are allowed but must remain leashed at all times. Campers must use only approved firewood to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Directions
From Park Rapids, take US-71 north approximately 21 miles to the Itasca State Park entrance. Enter the park and follow signs to Wilderness Drive, a one-way scenic road that leads to the Elk Lake Group Camp area.
