About
Established in 1891, Itasca State Park is Minnesota's oldest state park and home to 11 remote backcountry campsites that offer adventurous campers a true wilderness experience. These walk-in or paddle-in sites are scattered throughout the park's expansive 32,000 acres, which encompass more than 100 lakes and pristine old-growth red and white pine forests. The most spectacular sites, including campsites 3 and 4, are located along the shores of Hernando DeSoto Lake and can be reached via multiple routes: a 4-mile hike on the DeSoto Trail, a 2.75-mile trek on the North Country National Scenic Trail, or a half-mile portage followed by a paddle across the lake. Each backcountry campsite is equipped with essential amenities including an in-ground fire ring, a cleared area for tent setup, a primitive latrine, and bear-proof food lockers to safely store provisions away from black bears and other wildlife. Campers must pack in all gear and supplies, filter water from natural sources before drinking, and practice Leave No Trace principles. These sites provide solitude and direct access to the park's hiking trails, pristine lakes, and the headwaters of the Mississippi River, making them ideal for experienced backpackers seeking to immerse themselves in Minnesota's wilderness.
Directions
Access to the remote campsites varies: some are reached via hiking trails, while others may require a combination of hiking and canoeing. Specific directions depend on the chosen campsite.
