About
Natural Tunnel State Park Primitive Campground provides a back-to-basics camping experience in the heart of Virginia's Appalachian Mountains. Located about half a mile from the main campground and bathhouse facilities, the primitive area accommodates up to five groups on 15x15-foot tent pads in a partially wooded setting. A utility building with electricity and lights is available for storage and food preparation, though cooking inside is prohibited. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring Natural Tunnel, a massive 850-foot-long cave-like passage carved through Purchase Ridge by Stock Creek over millions of years. The tunnel is so impressive it was called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" by William Jennings Bryan. Campers can access seven hiking trails, including routes to the tunnel floor, a chairlift ride offering panoramic views, and fishing opportunities along Stock Creek. Parking is available for up to five vehicles within the primitive camping area, with overflow parking at the campground entrance. The area operates seasonally and reservations must be made directly through the park office rather than the online reservation system.
Directions
From I-81, take U.S. 23 North to Gate City (about 20 miles). The turn-off to the park is at mile marker 17.4 on Rt. 23. Take Natural Tunnel Parkway about one mile east to park entrance. The primitive camping area is located approximately half a mile from the main campgrounds within the park.
