About

Natural Tunnel State Park's Primitive Campground offers a back-to-basics camping experience in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. Located in a partially wooded area approximately half a mile from the main campgrounds, this primitive site provides a more secluded camping option for tent campers seeking a rustic overnight stay near one of Virginia's most spectacular natural wonders. The primitive camping area features five designated 15x15 foot tent pads, a common fire ring for group gatherings, and a covered eating area equipped with four picnic tables. A utility building provides electricity and lighting suitable for storage or food preparation, though cooking inside is not permitted. Potable water is available via a spigot at the entrance to the primitive area, and two portable toilets serve the campsite. Parking accommodates up to five vehicles with limited overflow parking at the campground entrance if needed. This primitive site offers convenient access to Natural Tunnel State Park's seven walking trails, the iconic 850-foot natural tunnel carved through limestone, and the park's visitor center and chairlift. Campers can explore the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail area, enjoy cave tours, and participate in ranger-led programs. The park is known for its stunning geological formations, including the tunnel that stands 100 feet high inside and was called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" by William Jennings Bryan. The primitive campground provides an affordable, no-frills base camp for outdoor enthusiasts looking to experience this unique corner of Virginia.
