About

Myre-Big Island State Park encompasses over 1,600 acres of diverse habitat including remnant tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, and extensive wetlands surrounding Albert Lea Lake in southern Minnesota. The miscellaneous camping designation typically refers to backcountry or remote camping sites that are one to two miles from parking areas and accessible by hiking, mountain biking trails, or canoe. These primitive sites offer a more secluded experience compared to the park's developed campgrounds (Big Island and White Fox). The park is known for its excellent birding opportunities, with over 200 species recorded, and its network of trails suitable for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. The Great Marsh boardwalk trail provides access to wetland wildlife viewing. Campers should be prepared for minimal amenities at backcountry sites. The park's main campgrounds offer modern facilities including flush toilets, showers, and drinking water, which may be accessible to backcountry campers depending on location. Reservations are required for all camping in Minnesota state parks.
