About

Big Island Campground occupies the forested 116-acre Big Island within Myre-Big Island State Park in southern Minnesota. The 35 campsites are set among mature maple and basswood trees, providing shade and a sense of seclusion despite the campground's moderate density. Seventeen sites offer 30-amp electric hookups. Standard amenities include a picnic table and fire ring with grill at each site, potable water, and a nearby comfort station with flush toilets and hot showers available seasonally from mid-May through mid-October. The park preserves diverse habitats including oak savanna, prairie, and wetlands along 8 miles of Albert Lea Lake shoreline. Birders visit during migration for waterfowl and grassland species. The paved, ADA-accessible Blazing Star State Trail connects the campground to Albert Lea, while park trails loop through wet lowlands and grasslands. Canoe and kayak rentals are available. A dump station serves RV campers. The campground accommodates trailers and RVs up to 60 feet, though some individual sites may be challenging for larger rigs due to tight maneuvering. An accessible cabin sleeping five is also available. The park is 3 miles southeast of Albert Lea, about 90 minutes south of Minneapolis via I-35.

From I-35 exit 11, head east 1/3 mile, then turn south on Highway 38 and follow signs to the park entrance. Address: 19499 780th Ave, Albert Lea, MN 56007.
