About
Oakwilde Campground was historically a small, primitive hike-in campground situated along the Gabrielino National Recreation Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains. Located at approximately 1,800 feet elevation along the Arroyo Seco, the site was accessible via a 3-mile hike from Switzer Picnic Area or a 5-mile hike from the Altadena trailhead. The campground once offered 5 hike-in campsites with vault toilets and two hitching rails for equestrian visitors. The site has been decommissioned by the Forest Service and is no longer maintained or listed as an official campground. While the area may still be accessible to hikers, the facilities have deteriorated and the campground is not actively managed. Stream water from the Arroyo Seco was historically available but required treatment, and water flow can be unreliable during dry periods. The site previously operated year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system and no fees.
Directions
From Interstate 210 in La Cañada Flintridge, exit onto Angeles Crest Highway (Hwy 2) and drive 9.5 miles north to Switzer's Picnic Area. From there, hike approximately 3 miles down the trail to reach Oakwilde Campground. Alternatively, exit at Windsor/Arroyo off-ramp in La Cañada, proceed north to Ventura Street, and hike in from the gated fire road for about 5 miles to the campground.
