The Headwaters Inn is a beautifully maintained historic log structure built circa 1923 and located within Itasca State Park near Lake Itasca. This charming lodge originally served as the park headquarters before becoming a Hostelling International hostel, and is now operated by Minnesota State Parks. The inn features six comfortable guest rooms with full beds and three shared bathrooms, along with a full kitchen and spacious great room with a stone wood-burning fireplace. The inn is situated within walking distance of Lake Itasca's public water access, sports rental shop, swimming beach, picnic grounds, amphitheater, and playground. Guests can easily access the Mississippi River headwaters, where the mighty Mississippi begins its 2,300-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. The location provides direct access to Itasca State Park's extensive trail system and winter snowmobile trails. Guests can book individual rooms or rent the entire inn, making it ideal for both small groups and larger family or friend gatherings. The historic charm combined with the surrounding natural beauty of Minnesota's oldest state park creates a unique lodging experience for visitors seeking to explore the park's 32,000 acres of old-growth pine forests, diverse ecosystems, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Directions

The Headwaters Inn is located within Itasca State Park, approximately 21 miles north of Park Rapids, Minnesota. From Park Rapids, take U.S. Highway 71 north to the park entrance, then follow park signs to the inn.
