Blue Mounds Campground

Open — The campground is currently open for reservations year-round through the Minnesota DNR reservation system.

About

Blue Mounds State Park Campground is located in Rock County in Minnesota's southwest corner and offers 73 well-maintained campsites in a peaceful, tree-lined setting. The main campground features 40 electric sites and 33 non-electric sites, most of which are grassy and shaded. A smaller cart-in campground with 14 sites provides a more secluded experience. The park is renowned for its striking 100-foot Sioux quartzite cliffs rising from the plains, a 533-acre bison range home to approximately 100 pure-strain bison, and extensive tallgrass prairie reconstruction. The campground serves as a base for exploring the park's hiking trails, including the Upper Cliffline Trail which offers breathtaking views from atop the historic quarry. Rock climbing is popular on the rugged Sioux quartzite formations with routes ranging in difficulty. A six-mile paved bike trail connects the park to the nearby city of Luverne. The park was originally founded in 1937 as Mound Springs Recreation Area by the Works Projects Administration, which built two dams creating small lakes connected by a stream. Wildlife viewing opportunities include the bison herd, diverse prairie birds like blue grosbeaks, and June-July blooming prickly pear cactus.

Directions

From Luverne, MN, drive north on US-75 for 4 miles. Turn east onto County Road 20 and continue for 1 mile to reach the park entrance.
