Blue Mounds Tipis

Open

Tipis operate seasonally from May through October. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance via mndnr.gov/reservations.

About

Blue Mounds Tipis offer overnight accommodations in canvas tipis modeled after traditional Plains Indian shelters at Blue Mounds State Park in southwestern Minnesota. Each 18-foot diameter tipi sleeps up to six people and includes a cedar deck interior, an outdoor fire ring with cooking grill, and a picnic table. The tipis provide primitive camping without electricity, and guests should bring mosquito netting since the structures are not fully sealed like modern tents. The park sits atop a Sioux quartzite ridge that rises dramatically from the surrounding prairie, featuring one of the best remaining examples of native tallgrass prairie in Minnesota. The park is home to a herd of bison that roam a 100-acre enclosure, and visitors can take guided prairie and bison tours from late May through mid-October. The park also offers hiking trails along the distinctive pink quartzite cliffs, including views of a 1,700-foot-long rock wall built by early settlers. Campers have access to the main campground's shower and restroom facilities. The park requires a Minnesota State Parks vehicle permit for entry. Reservations can be made up to 120 days in advance through the Minnesota DNR reservation system.

Directions

From Luverne, take US Highway 75 north approximately 4 miles, then turn east on County Road 20. The park entrance is about 1 mile east on County Road 20.
