About

Mount Misery Campground offers a classic New England forest camping experience in the heart of Pachaug State Forest. Located in the Chapman Area off Route 49 in Voluntown, this rustic campground provides 22 wooded sites equipped with fireplaces and picnic tables. Facilities include pit toilets and drinking water, though there are no showers or electrical hookups. The maximum equipment length is 26 feet, making this best suited for tent camping and smaller trailers. The campground takes its name from Mount Misery, the highest point in the surrounding forest at 441 feet, which offers scenic views of the Pachaug Forest and Voluntown area. Nearby attractions include the Rhododendron Sanctuary, spectacular during peak bloom in early summer. The forest provides extensive trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Reservations are required with no walk-ins permitted. A two-night minimum applies for advance bookings, with single-night stays available within three days of arrival. Alcohol is strictly prohibited throughout Pachaug State Forest. The campground is located near public hunting lands, so visitors should exercise caution during hunting seasons.
