Moshannon State Forest

Moshannon State Forest encompasses over 190,000 acres of forested land in north-central Pennsylvania's PA Wilds region. The forest offers 23 designated motorized campsites distributed among four camping areas: Medix Run with 10 individual sites along Medix Grade Road, Shaggers Inn with 3 sites, Yellowsnake with 6 sites, and North Run Equine with 4 sites designed for equestrian campers. Sites are accessed via dirt or gravel forest roads with pull-off or short driveway configurations. This is truly primitive camping with no developed facilities or modern conveniences. There are no electric hookups, dump stations, potable water, restrooms, or trash disposal on state forest land. Some sites may have fire rings and picnic tables, but amenities vary by location. Campers must be self-sufficient and prepared to pack out all trash. Reservations are required for all motorized campsites and can be made up to eleven months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system. Maximum stay is seven nights per visit with check-in/out at 3:00 PM. Primitive backpack camping is also permitted throughout most of the forest with a free permit.

Directions

From I-80, take Exit 111 and merge onto PA-153 N. In 1.0 mile, turn right onto Old Route 153 (State Park Road) to the Moshannon State Forest district office.
