Black Moshannon State Park

Open — The campground operates from the second Friday in April through mid-December after deer season. Modern cabins are available year-round.

Special Weather Statement issued December 30 at 5:58AM EST by NWS State College PA

5:58 AM — 11:00 AM

Strong west-northwest winds and moisture streaming off the relatively warmer waters of the Great Lakes will generate narrow, slowly-meandering bands of briefly heavy lake effect snow. These snow bands will impact portions of I-99 in Blair and Centre County between mile markers 15 and 85, I-80 between mile marker 138 and 193, as well as roadways in Huntingdon, Cameron, Clinton, Mifflin, Lycoming Tioga, Sullivan and Potter counties for the next several hours. Bands of lake effect snow can quickly reduce visibility and cause rapid accumulations of snow greater than one inch per hour. The reduced traction and blinding visibility of a snow band can make travel very dangerous very quickly. Use extra caution if you must travel this morning. If you encounter bands of heavy snow, slow down, turn on your hazard lights and consider exiting the highway. Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads may lead to accidents. Allow plenty of stopping distance between you and the vehicle ahead. Avoid braking suddenly.

High Wind Warning issued December 30 at 2:42AM EST until December 30 at 4:00PM EST by NWS State College PA

2:42 AM — 4:00 PM

* WHAT...West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Peak wind gusts should begin to decrease later this morning into the afternoon. * WHERE...Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Clearfield, Northern Centre, and Somerset Counties. * WHEN...Until 4 PM EST this afternoon. * IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strong winds will also be accompanied by lake effect snow showers, which will reduce visibility and make roads slick.

About

Black Moshannon State Park campground offers 73 campsites in the heart of central Pennsylvania's Moshannon State Forest. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern holder, with most sites able to accommodate either tents or trailers. The campground provides a range of electrical hookup options, and select sites feature full service hookups with sewer, water, and electricity. Modern amenities include washhouses with flush toilets, hot showers, water stations throughout the campground, coin-operated laundry machines, and a sanitary dump station. Some campsites are ADA accessible, and pets are permitted on designated sites. The park is centered around the 250-acre Black Moshannon Lake, named for its distinctive tea-colored waters caused by tannic acid from nearby wetlands. This unique ecological setting provides excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, and wildlife watching, including the chance to spot loons. The park serves as a gateway to the 40-mile Allegheny Front Trail loop and features extensive trails for hiking and biking through bog habitat at the Black Moshannon State Natural Area. In addition to campsites, the park offers rustic and modern cabins, deluxe camping cottages, organized group tenting areas, and a year-round lodge.
