About

Memorial Beach is a remote dispersed camping and day-use area at the northern end of Prince of Wales Island, accessible via Forest Road 20860 off FR 20 toward Port Protection. A 1,000-foot trail winds through an impressive grove of old-growth Sitka spruce to reach three hardened campsites along a scenic beach overlooking Sumner Strait. The site features a rustic shelter with a wood stove and bunks for overnight use, along with picnic tables, fire rings, and a vault toilet. No potable water is available; campers must bring their own. Camping is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required. Memorial Beach was named to honor twelve individuals who perished in a plane crash in Sumner Strait, with a memorial at the beach commemorating their lives. The area offers exceptional wildlife viewing including humpback and killer whales, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, black bears, and Sitka black-tailed deer. On clear days, views extend to Kupreanof and Kuiu Islands and the mainland peaks beyond.
