About
Devil's Elbow Cabin sits on a narrow isthmus on Kuiu Island in Rocky Pass, along Keku Strait between Kuiu and Kupreanof Islands. Named for the sharp turn in Rocky Pass, the cabin provides a protected staging point for kayakers and canoers exploring the area's interesting geology. The surrounding tide flats are a rockhound's paradise and a major waterfowl resting area. The A-frame cabin sleeps up to 7 people with bunks and a sleeping loft. It includes a table, benches, and an oil stove for heating (visitors must bring #1 heating oil or kerosene, approximately 1 gallon per day). A pit toilet outhouse is provided. There is no potable water; the nearest creek is a quarter-mile south, and water must be treated or boiled before consumption. Visitors must bring all bedding, cooking gear, food, and pack out all garbage. Access is by boat or float plane only. Float plane access requires a 16-foot tide for direct landing; lower tides require a half-mile walk across tide flats. The cabin is popular for steelhead fishing (April-May), coho salmon (August-September), and hunting for waterfowl, grouse, and bear in designated seasons.
Directions
Access by boat: 66 miles from Petersburg or 26 miles from Kake. Access by float plane: 44 miles from Petersburg. A 16-foot tide is required for direct float plane access; lower tides require a half-mile walk on the tide flat. Refer to USGS topographic maps Petersburg C6 and D6.
