Red Bay Lake Cabin
Open year-round with reservations through Recreation.gov. In fall, winter, and early spring the cabin may be inaccessible as float planes cannot land on the frozen lake. Guests should bring extra supplies for potential 2-5 day weather delays.

About
Red Bay Lake Cabin offers a quintessential Alaskan backcountry lodging experience on the northern part of Prince of Wales Island. The 15' x 17' two-story Pan-Abode log cabin sits on the forested shore of Red Bay Lake, surrounded by old-growth spruce, hemlock, and cedar with dramatic views of Red Bay Mountain's 3,000-foot limestone cliffs. The cabin sleeps 8 with two bunks and a spacious sleeping loft. Amenities include a wood stove for heat (firewood sometimes provided but not guaranteed), table and benches, cooking counter, shelves, fire extinguisher, axe, and broom. An outhouse is located outside. The Forest Service provides an aluminum skiff with oars at the cabin for lake access; guests may bring a long-shaft motor. Fishing is the primary draw, with abundant coho, pink, chum, and sockeye salmon, steelhead, cutthroat, and Dolly Varden in the surrounding waters. Wildlife includes loons, bald eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer, and black bears. Guests must bring all food, sleeping gear, cook stove with fuel, water, light source, toilet paper, first aid supplies, personal flotation devices, and garbage bags to pack out all trash.
Directions
Accessible by float plane (40 air miles from Wrangell, 55 from Craig, 84 from Ketchikan) or by vehicle/hike/boat combination. Drive 3.5 hours from Hollis or 2 hours from Thorne Bay on Forest Road #20 to the trailhead, hike 0.75 miles on boardwalk through old-growth cedar to a Forest Service rowboat, then row 1.5 miles across Red Bay Lake to the cabin.
