About
The Nooya Lake Shelter is a rustic 3-sided Adirondack-style structure located on the edge of Nooya Lake within the spectacular Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness in southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest. The shelter sits in the north arm of Rudyerd Bay, which opens off the east shore of Behm Canal, offering visitors dramatic views of the surrounding wilderness landscape. This primitive shelter is available year-round on a first-come-first-served basis at no charge. Facilities include two pit toilets, but visitors must bring all their own drinking water as no potable water is available on site. The area requires Leave No Trace practices including packing out all trash, leftover food, and toilet paper. The location is notable for being in the flightseeing path of floatplanes serving Misty Fjords, resulting in heavy daytime air traffic from May through August. Visitors should be prepared for remote wilderness conditions and extreme weather, as the shelter can only be accessed by floatplane or boat.
