Loyalsock State Forest
Open year-round with site rotation in effect: only even-numbered campsites are available through June 30, 2026. Odd-numbered sites reopen July 1. Bridle Trail and Masten CCC Camp sites are open regardless of rotation. Campfires require District Forester authorization through May 25 due to spring wildfire season restrictions.
About
Loyalsock State Forest encompasses 114,552 acres across Sullivan, Lycoming, and Bradford counties in Pennsylvania's northern tier. Named for Loyalsock Creek, a scenic freestone stream that winds through its heart, this rugged forest offers primitive camping for those seeking solitude and a genuine wilderness experience. Over 130 miles of well-maintained public roads wind through the forest, providing access to dispersed campsites. The forest offers four types of motorized camping: roadside campsites (73 sites) located along dirt and gravel forest roads, roadside hike-in campsites (32 tent-only sites) with designated parking and short trails to more secluded spots, rustic camping at Masten CCC Camp (6 sites) with vault latrines and fire rings, and equestrian camping at Bridle Trailhead (17 sites) with hitching posts and restroom facilities. There are no modern conveniences, potable water, dump stations, or utility hookups anywhere in the state forest. Due to heavy use and sanitation concerns, all designated campsites follow a six-month rotation: even-numbered sites are open January through June, while odd-numbered sites are open July through December. Sites at Bridle Trail and Masten Campground are exempt from this rotation and remain available year-round. The maximum stay is 7 consecutive nights, after which campers must vacate for 48 hours before returning.
