About

Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop Group Campground sits at the head of the beautiful Placer River Valley, accessible only via the Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery train from Portage. The campground features two group sites nestled among cottonwood and alder trees that have grown since Spencer Glacier's retreat. Site A accommodates up to 15 guests, Site B up to 10 guests, or both can be reserved together for groups of up to 25 people. The sites share a common area with three picnic tables, a bear box, tarp poles, and a campfire ring. The area is renowned for packrafting, kayaking, and canoeing on Spencer Glacier Lake, where visitors can explore massive icebergs and witness glacier calving. A viewing area located a quarter-mile down the trail offers spectacular vistas of Spencer Glacier. The surrounding Kenai Mountains provide habitat for black and brown bears, wolves, lynx, wolverine, and moose, with mountain goats and marmots visible at higher elevations. In summer, the area offers hiking, rock climbing, and fishing, while winter brings backcountry skiers, snowmobilers, and ice climbers. To access the campground, drive south from Anchorage on the Seward Highway to the Portage Rail Depot at Milepost 80 and board the Glacier Discovery train. Reservations are required for both the campground and train tickets through the Alaska Railroad website.
