About

Kehl Springs Campground sits in a stand of ponderosa pines right at the brink of one of Arizona's most spectacular geologic features, the Mogollon Rim. This intimate 8-site primitive campground is perched at 7,441 feet elevation, where the Colorado Plateau abruptly ends in a dramatic 2,000-foot escarpment. The location provides breathtaking views of Four Peaks, the Sierra Anchas, and the Mazatzal Mountains, while offering temperatures 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the desert floor below. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and provides basic amenities including fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets at each site. The General Crook Historic Trail passes by the campground, offering excellent hiking opportunities, and the surrounding area provides access to mountain biking and off-road vehicle trails. Wildlife is abundant, with deer commonly seen near campsites. The campground is accessible via Forest Road 300, a dirt road that can be navigated by sedan but requires caution due to narrow, bumpy sections.

Directions

From Flagstaff, drive 50 miles south on Lake Mary Road to Clints Well, then 9 miles southwest on State Route 87 to Forest Road 300 (General Crook Trail). Turn left (east) on FR 300 and drive 6 miles to the campground. FR 300 is a dirt road that is narrow and bumpy but generally passable by sedan when conditions are good.
