About

Mavreeso Campground is located along Forest Road 535 (West Dolores Road) in San Juan National Forest, approximately 13 miles north of Dolores, Colorado. The campground stretches along the West Dolores River, which has its headwaters in the nearby Lizard Head Wilderness. A shady forest of spruce, ponderosa pine, and Douglas fir provides pleasant camping at 7,600 feet elevation. The campground features 19 sites total: 12 are reservable through Recreation.gov, with 5 of those offering electric hookups. The remaining sites operate first-come, first-served. A group site accommodates up to 18 people but does not allow RVs or trailers. All individual sites include wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and fire grates, with pull-through options available for RVs up to 35 feet. The West Dolores River offers excellent fishing for brown, rainbow, cutthroat, and brook trout, with a dedicated parking area for anglers. Mountain biking is permitted on Forest Roads 532 and 535, and Forest Service Trail 624 begins two miles south. Mesa Verde National Park, Canyon of the Ancients, and the Anasazi Heritage Center are all within day-trip distance.
