About
Burro Bridge Campground sits on a sloping hillside above the West Dolores River in San Juan National Forest, two miles northeast of the historic mining town of Dunton. The campground has 14 first-come, first-served sites with shade trees, vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, and fire grates. For campers with horses, a nearby corral with two bays can accommodate two horses per day adjacent to two of the campsites. The campground provides easy access to Lizard Head Wilderness for hiking and horseback riding but does not offer direct river access. One site has a wheelchair-accessible picnic table. Parking pads accommodate RVs up to 35 feet, though the last six miles of West Dolores Road are steep, narrow, and not recommended for trailers. This is a pack-it-out campground with no trash service. Limited services run from late September through October, with no services (water, restrooms, or trash pickup) from October through May. The West Dolores Road eventually rejoins Highway 145 six miles north of Rico after 32 miles.
Directions
From Dolores, head north on Highway 145 about 13 miles. Turn left onto West Dolores Road (Forest Road 535). Burro Bridge Campground is two miles northeast of Dunton. The gravel road is passable, but the last 6 miles are steep, narrow, and not recommended for trailers.
