Schonchin Springs Campground sits approximately 1 mile from Medicine Lake in the Medicine Lake Recreation Area of Modoc National Forest. This small, primitive campground attracts campers seeking solitude and a more secluded environment compared to the four other campgrounds in the area. The campground gets most of its use when other Medicine Lake campgrounds are full. The campground is suitable for tents or small RVs and offers basic amenities including picnic tables and fire rings at each site. No water or garbage service is provided, so visitors must bring sufficient water for drinking, cooking, washing, and extinguishing campfires. All trash, garbage, and pet waste must be packed out. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Schonchin Springs typically opens in early July and remains accessible through late October, weather permitting. Winter access is not maintained, and the campground closes when snow arrives. The surrounding Medicine Lake area offers opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, and exploring volcanic features.

Directions

From McCloud, go east on US Highway 89 south for 16 miles to Forest Service Road 15/Harris Spring Road. Turn left on Road 15 and go 4.4 miles to Forest Service Road 49/Medicine Lake Road. Follow the signs 27.5 miles to Medicine Lake. Drive past the entrance to Headquarters Campground, take the first right, then the first left. Continue approximately 0.5 mile to the campground.
